Marienburg Mercenary Army - Painting Log
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:33:27 PM »
Greetings all!

Long time, no post

I have been lurking about for the last few months and have finally, finally, got the urge to paint again.

Awhile ago I started a Hochland Army painting thread that I obviously never updated. To tell you the truth I got very tired of painting Christmas colors. Still liked the idea behind the army, just never liked what I was doing paint/conversion wise.

So, I have decided to once again dust off the paints and dig in for a fun project full of interesting units and fun color schemes.

A Marienburg Mercenary Army! I will have swordsmen from Araby, Great Swords from Lustria, and Amazonian Archers and militia (oh what fun).

I don’t have an army list just yet and probably wont have one for awhile. For now I am just going to focus on painting minis and will let the list figure itself out as I go.

Being that I haven’t painted for about a year I decided to start small. Thus, I am paining some 2nd edition cannons that I have had for about 15 years or so.

Here are the first 3 minis –

Sorry for the bad pic. I only have a point and shoot. I will get better I promise  :eusa_wall:

PLEASE give feedback so that I can get better. I am no Drunken Halfling, but my hopes are that my minis will be table top approved

Thank you for the feedback. Yeah, the bases are pretty dull. I plan on having the cannon and crew members inserted into a themed base. Just havent started work on the base yet.

I'd recommend working in some red, even if its just details, because currently they look more like Nordlanders.

However, like the painting beyond that. :icon_biggrin: :icon_cool:

Welcome back, and look forward to seeing more of what you paint! :::cheers:::

You say that like it's a bad thing.  Every province's troops should aspire to look like Nordlanders!

Those look very good!

It might be the flash but right now the colours seem very intense. This is no problem on its own but combined with the old school goblin green bases this effect is magnified. Therefore I'd suggest redoing the Goblin Green with a dark brown. This will tone down the minis and give them a more serious look while they will still have flashy clothing!

1 more gunner was finished today and I have another 5 started. That leaves me only 3 more to do after that.

Yes, I have 12 Gunners - 2 Cannons and 2 Mortars - this gives me flexibility with the size and type of army I can play with.

I also just won a bunch of GW Amazons that will be converted to Archers as soon as I can get around to them.

They will have to wait for me to finish all 16 of my Pistoliers....ugh, so many horses.

PS - I am using a dark brown base to tone down the brightness of the minis. Thank you BAWTRM and everyone else for the great suggestions. I just hope to keep getting better.

Hi

I really like your models so far, your colour scheme looks good. Do you mind if I ask how you painted the yellow and the blue?

Also, I agree with the others who have said that a darker base would improve them and make them look even better.

Thanks,
Sean.

Thanks for the kind words Sean.

I use old school (white flip top) GW paints. I bought a bunch of them when I first got into the hobby (early 90's) so some of the colors that I use may not be around anymore.

Blue - Regal Blue base coat, Enchante Blue 1st highlight (I basically repaint the blue), Lightning Bolt Blue final highlight. I use blue ink to make sure the darker areas stay well defined.

Yellow - Base with Sunburst Yellow, 1st Highlight (again, basically a repaint) Bad Moon Yellow, 2nd highlight is skull white. I use yellow Ink here to give the yellow more depth.

To be honest with you, I would see if drunkenhalfling has some other 'yellow' tricks.

Still working on my flesh tones. I have another 4 minis to post when I get the time.

I am bad at posting pics!

PS - I now have brown bases :)

Do take a look at our summer campaign army lists (up for reviewal in the EF), they'll be just up your street with this army concept.

Also, make sure to focus (half pressing the shutter button) BEFORE "framing" the image.

OK - so here are 6 minis that I finished last week. I still have another 3 gunners to finish and then on to the mortars and cannons.

Now, I know I need to work on the eyes, and I will try for better results with my next round of minis. Still, I am going to say that they dont look too bad considering I havent been painting for years.

Oh, FYI - the plastic gunners are better sculpts then the old metal ones.

I should be done with the 3 gunners and at least 1 cannon/mortar this week.

Cheers!

Here is a long delayed update. I really dont like paiting cannons now. It was such a pain in the @$$!
Anyhow, I am working on some archers now and then I will move on to my Crossbowmen.

After that it will be my 12 pistoliers and then some amazon archers. Yes, I have lots of missile troops. Something I learned some a friend of mine. Lots of dice equals lots of chances to hit and wound.

Ah well, enjoy.

Some Archers/Huntsmen -

I am currently working on 10 Crossbowmen and then I will work on Cannon #2 (dont like painting cannons).

After that then it is on to my 1st unit of Pistoliers and then some Amazons.

Lepous (sp?) brown base color with a mix of Lepous Brown and Bleached Bone for the highlights.

Thank you for the kind words.

@peraturabo: Thank you :)
I plan on stripping the paint off of the 1st few cannon crewmen and repainting them while I work on my second cannon. Honestly, it's thanks to all of you that I am getting better. I ask a question and you all answer it....sounds corny I know, but I really have the board to thank for all of the improvements.

@dfb: Thank you. I want my paint jobs to stand out. I am not anywhere as talented as others on this board, but I get LOTS of ideas.
