The Ostland Von Rauken Vindictors
« on: December 16, 2009, 04:07:53 AM »
Howdy.

I am joining the ranks of the Empire and am working up my army. I am torn bewtween doing a Middenheim army and an Ostland army. This thread will focus on my Ostland army ( I have enough Empire figures to do both) but which one will look better I am not sure of.

Anyhoo, this is my first test model for the Ostland army. I am sorry if Castle Von Rauken is haunted or sacked or just plain wrong, but it is on the map and sounded cool.

The Spearman is not complete and still needs some work, but the cloth and armor or more or less done.

My thinking with Ostland is to do an army primarily in Black and White with red accents and the Red Bull ( no wings here lol) featured heavily. I think the red will give the amry a little more visual interest.

I am not entirely sure which direction this army is going, I am more of a painter than a wargamer and I like the army to look interesting. I am figuring to use Knights of Morr and Knights of the Blazing Sun.

C&C welcome. Thanks!!

Hey thats not bad. I like the southern states myself but that is not bad, not bad at all. Just remember to do the armour in a dark iron tone, boltgun metal works best for this put, some rust on there too. I would tell you how I do my rust but you have to be a VERY GOOD friend for me to tell you, my secrets are not for sale.

It's bad that warhammer might die but it would be a tragedy if it stays dead!

Nice start. One thing I'd say is that the paint looks a little thick in places but other than that its really nice   :eusa_clap:

Thanks for the replies.

The armor.
I am going to keep it black, or laquered. I very much like the black armor look on these guys. I might put a few chipped places on the armor here and there. What I like most about the black armor is it makes the white and red "pop" a little more. I think the metallic competes too much with white for attention to the eye.

Not so sure about rust.

Paint thickness.
Actually, its the primer not the paint. The primer can I used came out very powdery, so in some place it stuck and others it did'nt. I cleaned it up as best I could before applying a second coat of primer, but some of these guys are going to look a little rough in places. It's annoying, but not a show stopper. I always thin my paint.

The spear shaft, spear tip and tassel need to be worked on significantly. They are just base colors for right now.

Ideally I want a nice looking army, not neccessarily a Golden Demon quality army since then I won't want to play with it because it could get damaged or scratched.

Thanks!!

I really like how your spearman turned out! I like the black armour on him as well. Love the combination of red and black on the cloth. The face is done in a way I have never seen before, I mean that in a positive way.

I would really like to see more figures man!

Cheers

Howdy all.

SO I have worked on a few more figures for my Spearmen unit. I am not sure if they will be a parent unit or detachment yet, but work on them I must.

I am sad I only have 3 more spearmen to add to the collection, but life has been busy with lots of football for the kids, travel and life in general.

I have begun the coversion work on some of my 6th Ed spearmen. I like the pose of one of the bearded spearmen advancing, but I hate the head, it looks halfway done. So I have purchased a lot ( read 70 +) pistolier/outrider headsto replace ugly heads and ensure most of my army has true helmets and not a floppy hat. Nothing wrong with floppy hats, but that is not the look I am really going for in this army. Sadly I did not have them at the time I did these guys, sorry...

I have also managed to pick up a couple of old bretonnian sheilds with the Bull head on them. I have mold material on order to begin production on these. I intend for most of the army shields to have bulls heads on them. Cast on would be preferable to painted on, but I can do either if need be.

Also, I am hopeful to track down a Chaos Dwarf Taurus so I can use the head as a figurehead for my Steam tank. I think it would look pretty neat and quite gaudy at the same time. :)

Pictures are a little blurry, I took these pictures with a different camera and it did not turn out as well as I would have liked my Sony.

As always CNC welcome. Thanks!

If you are going for the black lacquer armor look, you may want to add a clear gloss coat to the armor to give it that little extra shine. It also gives it a more finished look IMO. Nevertheless, good start and keep posting.

Looking good, I agree with the above poster about using gloss on the black armour though :)

Same here, if it's going to be black, it would look good glossed.  And perhaps edge it with bronze/gold.

Although it looks as though the speartips haven't been done yet, so I'm guessing it still needs the metallics done.

Thanks for the comments.

The armor will be done with a bit of a gloss. I still need to touch up the eyes a bit, I not super thrilled with the look right now, and the spears need the tips and wood touched up. Not done yet, but almost.

I still need to seal these guys and then apply the gloss varnish.

I need to keep a balance on what I am wanting to do and the time it takes to get it done. My oldest son, and best critic, keeps telling me I need to highlight more here or there. But he is used to my Demon entry pieces and competition models. These gusy however, need to be a respectable table top standard, so certainly some things are left more or less bare bones. The idea being to actually finish an army in less than 2 years. LOL.

Anyhoo, I am going to work on some of the command group figures this evening and get some paint on another 4 spearmen. Hopefully them will be done by the end of the weekend. If I can get 8 figures done a week, I will be in pretty good shape to finish this army by the end of summer.

Howdy Friends

I did get the opportunity to work on several models a few weeks ago. That is the good, the bad is I have had very little time since to work on anything.

Anyhoo, here is the first unit at approximately 1/2 strength.

I have another 13 models in progress, some with round shields so I can vary the first 2 ranks to go with or without shields. Also the command sections has been converted. All of my Spearmen models are the older 3rd edition Spearmen. I rather like the look of them, but some of the heads are quite ugly so I have replaced them with Pistolier and Outrider heads.

I have tried to lighten up the black slightly so that it can show some shade to give it a little bit more definition. I don't know if it will come out on your screens, but it does show up on mine. I have glazed the red with a thinned red ink to add some more intensity.

Also, note to from experimentation. If you have a good recipe for doing white, do not try to short cut it. Ultimately it takes twice as long as before. I applied a very heavy wash of Turquoise to the white primer and it just made a mess of things. My normal process is to prime in white, paint a layer of P3 Frostbite, then wash with Turquoise, and then highlight back up. Has a nice cool feel and plenty of depth.

C&C welcome and encouraged. I hope you like what I have up for review. Thanks!

Love it. Simple but very cool colour scheme.
Pink is like red but not quite.

Very neat especially considering the difficult colours you are trying to work with, namely black & white  :eusa_clap:

Nice work, especially for RnF troops. ..White primer, I use it myself too and if it turns out too grainy, then you might try spraying additional layer or two. In my experience this remedies the problem as the surface of the miniature gets more polished in this way-the paint obviously fills the tiny cracks of the first priming layer.

Dread Pirate Garness,

Capital work with the spearmen.  But I must know, how did you get  your bases to look like that?  I (eventually) plan on creating an autumn themed Ostland/Hochland army, and I would love to use your technique to create a "wet earth" look for the bases.

Cheers!
