Stirland River Patrol
« on: December 07, 2009, 05:48:20 PM »
Hey all, having been inspired by several logs here in the past i thought i would share my work. Im involved in the TOFP over at Warseer which is a great way to motivate yourself to get some painting done. Is there anything like that here?

Camera phone pics but not bad for all that:

Lancers (IC Knights)

Lancer Banner (Not sure why i took a picture of this side, the other side is more extensive)

Wizard (meant to look like part of the army-no flashiness for him-need to finish his base with water effects)

Handgunners (basic i know but since its paint X per month i did a basic job, when ive finished the 1000pts ill go back and make them look like the pic at the very bottom)

Swordsmen (same as Handgunners-basic for now)

Finished Handgunner

This is a very very good looking unit! Seems like they can put out a stubborn fight too.
Lets hunt for some Talabecs!
Hobbits are stupid, Talabecs are thieves and Averlanders reek of horse shit.

Welcome to the forum.

Great work, although the finished hangunner pic is a bit dark...

Good stuff! While the bottom picture isn't showing too much, the finished result seems to be really great! You did a very clean job with those striped pants, and it really just adds that extra something to the otherwise plain pants of the 7th ed statetroops.

Keep it up! :icon_biggrin:

Nice looking force there, consistent use of colour too.

I like how you've used the majority of pistoliers as knights, gives them that "poor Stirland" look while using nicer models - win/win!

The only thing I would say is that the handgunners and swordsmen don't have the rag tag look I associate with Stirland. More without shoes and patched clothing etc would help this.

Otherwise, great stuff!

Cheers,

Dante

It's the River Patrol - they are extremely well-funded!

No need to turn this 'poor Stirland' thing into a caricature.

This army is looking really good so far. I expecially like the lancers. Very nice work on combining the knight parts with the pistolier/outrider parts. Wizard definetly fits the theme as well. Keep up the great work man. I'll be checking back for updates.

Thanks a lot guys, comments keep me motivated! Ive finished one greatsword as an example and have the majority of the 9 others base coated, probably one more night to finish basecoating. Having trouble getting the pics to download or id have something to show by now, ill try again this weekend.

@CM Dante-rufus sparkfire pretty much had the right of it, i think the River Patrol would have the best funding of out of pretty much any army in Stirland so they'll look for the most part like a professional army. Thats why i greenstuffed the shoeless guy some shoes. I will have a couple more rag-tag units though.

Fair enough, just my personal opinion afterall. I just think it would be more fun to continue a theme that is well established in the fluff for Stirland to make a really unique looking force.

Still great stuff though, as I say, thats just my opinion.

@ rufus - calm down dear, only a suggestion!

Honestly when i started this army i had a very professional army in mind with some inspiration from the Napolean era French. Having started to paint them green and white i realized i didnt have any fluff and lo and behold, Stirland River Patrol used those very colors! I have some ideas for sailors and boat mounted cannons now though so im definitely going to pull some flavor in.

My word!  :icon_eek: Your greatswords appear to be followers of Cthuhlu.  Nice work.  The bases really finish it off nicely.

Lol  :icon_mrgreen:. I put a kraken on the banner since i was trying to keep the sea life theme and needed something impressive for the greatswords but now that you mention it.....it does look a bit Cthonian. I wonder if their Lord knows  :icon_eek:?

Thanks for the compliments guys, i dont get the D11 reference though. The banner was indeed freehand, only the second time ive done it, first was on my knights.

So are you highlighting the white, green and red? I cannot really tell, I am merely curious how far your wishing to paint your army, either battle rdy or tournament.

Everything on the knights and greatswords is highlighted and shaded. The state troops are pretty much just basecoated.

because of the banner of the D11 corsairs
they actually have a kraken on the top of the banner
