What WS does an opponent use to strike a War Altar?
« on: August 14, 2007, 04:42:02 PM »
This may have been answered before (and it might have been in the book), but I couldn't seem to find it (maybe Im having a newb relapse ?) I looked through the WE compiled FAQ thing but didn't see it

Anyways, IIRC I thought that when the enemy strikes at a chariot, it uses the "crews" WS. When striking at a War Altar, does that mean the Arch Lector? Is he considered "crew"?? Because when a normal character displaces a crew member on, say a chaos chariot, they still use the other crews WS when striking at it, not the characters (i think, I dont play chaos  :engel:) But the War Altar doesn't really have a crew, per se.

Hell, I might be wrong on the above points to, I dont use chariots other than the War Altar.

I have been playing where they use the WS3 of the horses, but I wasn't sure. Could someone clarify that for me? Thanks

P.S. If this turns into a rules discussion where its not covered, maybe it should go in the FAQ

This is the problem that GW created when the failed to provide for an additional crew member instead of the Arch Lector.  Lack of play testing strikes again.
I do not think that there is a correct answer.  Roll for it.
1-3 standard human lacky, WS3, BS3, ST3, TO3, I3.
4-6 Arch Lector or Volkmar's stats.
Sigmar on a sling, the stuff some people come up with. . . .

Ok, so its not just me

Like I said, I always have been playing it as though the horse was treated as the correct stats to attack. AKA WS3, T5 (Altar), 5+ AS, 4+ WS

The only real difference is WS. How have you guys been playing? I cant imagine this hasn't came up before... It comes up in nearly all my games

You must use horse WS. This is in the BRB chariot section.

This is a stealth change in 7th edition.

Now you use either the crew's WS or the creatures' WS, whichever is higher. in this particular case, I'd say to use the horses' WS.

ok... but if it says you use the "Crews" or the "Creatures", then the real question is does the Arch lector/Volkmar count as crew? I mean, if theres noone else there to run the thing, then he must be the one crewing it (logically)

Although on the other hand, if the Arch Lector/Volkmar dies (god forbid  :icon_wink:), then do you revert to the lower WS?

And dont even go into how the War Altar is still active when they die... it doesn't matter at this point

On pg 64 of the BRB it states that enemies can choose to attack the character or the chariot. Given that i would use the horse's stats, given that there is no other crew, if the enemy decides to attack the chariot otherwise they are attacking the character so you would use his stats.

That's how I read it anyways.

You roll against WS3 if you attack the Chariot and Ws4 if you go after the character.  The character does not become "crew" because they are on the chariot (just like characters joining a warmachine are not"crew")  Yeah, it is weird and whacky that a chariot has no crew (TK have the same issue) and drives itself, but this is fantasy, hehe suspend the disbelief.

If a warrior priest can rouse a horse to hate the enemy then it isn't too much of a stretch to think they could give them a brief synopsis of the battle plan at the beginning of the fight and let the horse run the chariot... :icon_lol:

It would be nice if they had to roll against the character's WS when attacking the Chariot, but I'd hate to remove the character when the chariot bites the dust because he was "crew"  :icon_biggrin:

ok, that makes sense

I didn't see any clear cut rule, per se, so I thought I would ask. I have been playing it as WS3 anyways, but I figured I would ask and see how everyone else was doing it

I've heard the rumors, but thats the first time I have actually seen an ogre pull a mans arm out of its socket! Well, assuming you dont die of blood loss I'll be "Interviewing" you in a couple hours

later  :icon_wink:

p.s. Im glad Rufas finally decided to front the dough for the Inquisitorial "Kill-Cams". And he thought it wouldn't be a good investment, bah!
