Ogre Kingdoms DoW Illegal?
« on: May 29, 2007, 06:55:11 PM »
I did some searching and couldn't find a definitive answer here on the boards. I assume that they are illegal since all DoW that are not specifically named as legal for the Empire can't be taken since DoW are not mentioned in the Empire book.

That being said, if they are illegal and you were playing a non-tournament game would you mind if a player went ahead and included some? It clearly breaks the rules by doing so.

Looking at the new Empire special character for the Nemesis Crown you can use that as the basis for empire being allowed to used DoW's.

that was the link and the discussion about it.

This has been brought up many times.  I think you can probably find a thread with the search topic (which should probably be stickied or something).  DoW are legal as it stands.  There might be some tournaments that do not allow it, but other than that, no problem.

Dogs of War and Regiments of Renown are 100% legal, but I'm curious, what is the exact wording used in Ogre Kingdoms armybook regarding hiring them as DoW?

(I wouldn't have any issues, whatever the actual wording is.)

And even if they do not allow you to use Dogs Of War, they are in the wrong.  GW/Gav Thorpe has stated both O&G and Empire still have DoW as options.

Not to mention all the GW material that states this like the DoW Book download, the Giant download, the Nemesis special character...

NO ONE should prevent you from taking DoW.

I downloaded the new DoW rules and see that they changed things.

Fielding ‘Dogs of War’ units in other Warhammer armies

Other armies from Ravening Hordes or the Warhammer Armiesbooks can field units from the Dogs of War list. In general, they are included in the lists as a Rare choice. In addition, thefollowing restrictions apply:

Empire, any Chaos, Dark Elves, Skaven, Vampire Counts, Khemri,Dwarfs, and Lizardmen armies can field any unit from the Dogsof War army list.

Very cool. Thank goodness they clarified that. I will definitely take some ogres.

As far as Ogres go, might I recommend 4 Ironguts with the War Banner?

Best I have found.

I dont think there is any wording in the OK armybook. But the rules can be found on the OK section : http://uk.games-workshop.com/ogrekingdoms/ogresforhire/1/

It's in the book also, Every can take Ogres except the Bretonnians, but they are as obnoxious enough as it is.  I find that Maneaters make fine Customer Service Reps, but the jury is still out with respect to their legal abilities.

Tell me Rufas, you have any trouble making enough combat resolution with the Maneaters?

I find that the +2 automatic CR with Ironguts with the War Banner is a good safeguard as sometimes they won't do too many wounds.

However, Maneaters are WS 4 and have plus 1 attack...

I just wish they weren't so darn expensive!

Maneaters are stubborn though Dendo, and they cause fear, so to actually break them is really quite difficult. Put a BSB nearby, and those Maneaters aren't going anywhere. Thats were the points go IMO...

In answer to your question Rightnow, here is the FAQ thread I recently collated which has a few answers to this subject, however this discussion is quite good also, so I have added a link to this as well.

Anything besides a musician seems overpriced to me for Ironguts.  Might just be me though, cause I generally field them in squads of 3, 4 at most.  Also if they get wiped out, its easy VP for the opponents.

I don't mind the maneaters' cost.. but it's the 2 rare slots that always prevents me from taking them.  They are awesome in DoW though, where they only take up 1 special choice.

I have had good success w/ 4 Ironguts. I either kit them out with just a musician or if I add a standard, I add the Rag Banner as it allows the Ogres to roll 3 dice for panic tests. This will come handy if you place the Ogres out on a flank where you fast cav might flee through them. The last thing you want is your Ogres panicking off the table because of a feigned flight from your pistoliers.

It's just a question of points cost for me.

4 Ironguts, 192.
Full Command 50.
War Banner 25.

Granted, the extra 20 points for the champion are a tad extravegant (I am going to start experimenting with Prayers Of Sigmar on the Irongut Champion) .  But even so, 4 Maneaters with Great Weapons and Heavy Armour are 360 points, 93 points more!

I just don't have that lying around, unless I drop the Pistoliers...I sure don't want that.

If I could find a way to make space for them in my rare slots, I'd definately go with maneaters.  The greatweapon equipped variety can smash a chariot in 1 hit, and the ones with longswords can mop up most other things.  And the handgunners haven't forgotten how to pack in the extra powder for the first shots.

The nice thing about stubborn is that they don't have any real trouble killing things, just like any small ogre unit it comes down to CR.  Stubborn gives you a good chance to stick around killing things until that CR ultimately shifts in your favor, reinforcements arrive, or the game is over anyway.

A Standard and The War Banner on Ironguts truly helps to.

CR with my unit of Ironguts hasn't really been a problem.  My decision between Maneaters and Ironguts can be summed up in this way as far as killing/damaging ability in close combat: Do I want to kill them bad, or do I want to kill them really bad?

However, the Maneaters are Immune to Psych.

Properlly equipped maneaters can dish out 4 strength 7 attacks each with a higher weapon skill than IGs.  I wouldn't take more than 3 personally unless I really wanted to send a message home to my opponent.  I definately respect the killing power of ironguts (I used to run 4 with war banner and a butcher in my old army every time) but even they have to stand in awe of the wayfaring Bill Braskies of their tribe.  This is a case where you get what you pay for.
